World Cup of Upsets

This World Cup so far has included some of the biggest upsets we have seen in history. Messi’s Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia which was only their 4th win in a World Cup ever. Japan also fought hard all match and scored two quick consecutive goals at the end to manage a win past the Germans. These games are considered upsets since Argentina and Germany are notoriously strong national teams and have won World Cups before in their pasts. I don’t think anyone would’ve ever been able to guess the outcomes to some of these games so far. I will not be surprised if we see any more upsets in this tournament.

United States

One upset that might shock the whole world of soccer (or football) would be the United States beating England. The U.S is a very young team with little to no experience in tournaments of such stature such as the World Cup. The average age of our team is 25 years old which goes to show how young this team really is. We played great in the first half against Wales with a well set up goal and plenty of chances. Our possession was great and link up plays really helped propel our attacks forward. Although we do have some strengths, we do have some weaknesses such as stamina in the later stages of games and consistency. The U.S always manages to get ahead early in the game but throws it away right at the end. This is a weakness I am hoping they avoid against England. Overall, the U.S has a young squad that is ready to win and prove to the world what the U.S is capable of.

England

England has plenty of world class talent which can be seen as intimidating to the U.S. They have always had a solid team for international tournaments and even got to the semi-finals in the last 2018 World Cup. Players such as Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and others have proven themselves as deadly strikers with them putting 6 past Iran’s goalkeeper earlier this week. It is hard to really tell if they are good right now though, scoring 6 on Iran is nothing special especially when their first team goalkeeper gets injured mid-game. I am curious how England holds up with the U.S’s pressure and quick plays since they like the slow game. Many English fans will make fun of American fans for even having hope but I think it is a fair judgment to have. England had a really rough Nations League with them losing to Hungary 4-0 and barely winning to teams they should destroy on paper. Regardless, this is still England we are talking about. England have always been solid and certainly won’t want to get beaten by a team that is not nearly as experienced as them.

Conclusion

Overall, this matchup between the United States and England will be very close. Both teams are a bit inconsistent and have had some rough games before going into this tournament. I think they will both have a point to prove and will need to go all out. I am very excited and honestly won’t be that upset if the U.S loses as long as I know they tried their best. Also if we do end up winning, it’s called SOCCER!
