Introduction
Kvicha Kvaratskhelia also known as “Kvara” is a soccer phenomenon from Tbilisi, Georgia. This season so far he has been tearing the Serie A and Champions League apart with 7 goals and 3 assists in both competitions. He has been a very intimidating prospect and it was no surprise a big club such as Napoli picked him up this summer. Although he has been getting exposure now, just over a year ago he was playing in the Russian league and had never played in the Champions League. So how did “Kvara” get to his position and where does he go from now?
Kvicha’s Background
Kvicha was born in Tbilisi Georgia which is a small country in Europe with a population of around 3.5 million. It comes as no surprise to say that not many world class soccer players are born and raised in such a country. Kvicha is different though and has been catching scouts’ eyes since he was very young. He played through multiple youth systems and by 16, he signed with Georgian club Dinamo Tbilisi. During his time at Dinamo he blossomed into a confident winger who took on defenders which became routine for him. Also during this time, he outperformed his U17 Georgia national team and was awarded the newly introduced Aleksandre Chivadze golden medal. This award is annually given by Georgian Football Federation (GFF) to talented young players. Obviously Georgian fans loved him with fans of opposing teams also praising him highly. Most games that Kvara played during his time in Georgia would be sold out because Gerogians wanted a glimpse at their next best player. Keep in mind that these games before Kvara started playing wouldn’t get more than 200 people. Kvara also made his senior international debut in June 2019 and played very well. Eventually around 2019, he was already becoming a top prospect and Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow loaned him out.
During his time at Lokomotiv he was consistent and showed the potential he had in store. He ended up leaving Lokomotiv after his loan expired and joining another Russian club called Rubin Kazan. He ended up scoring the equalizer against Lokomotiv during his debut game for Kazan. His time for Rubin Kazan became crucial for them with his market value increasing five times in a single season! In March 20222, he moved from Rubin Kazan after FIFA announced that due to Russia invading Ukraine that players were allowed to leave their Russian contracts and join other clubs. Luckily for Kvara, Serie A side Napoli swooped in and signed a deal lasting till 2027 for 10-12 million dollars. He immediately made an impact with two goals and an assist in his debut preseason game. He also scored on his professional debut for Serie A with a goal and assist. His time so far at Napoli has been incredible and definitely has outperformed what Napoli was expecting. This season Napoli has made the knockout stages for the Champions League without losing a single game during their group stages. They scored the most goals of any team and also embarrassed Liverpool with a 4-0 win over them. Overall, Napoli have a baller in their hands and will hopefully be looking to keep him for a couple more seasons.
Kvicha’s Playstyle
Kvara on the ball is extremely dangerous. To start with, he is 6 feet tall and is faster than most shorter wingers. This combo has allowed him to stay strong in a tough league such as the Serie A. He also knows how to dribble in tight scenarios, explode with pace and control and look for passes. In general, he is a complete winger with him being able to do everything that is asked from him. His tracking back skills are also consistent and is able to physically get people off the ball.
The president of Georgia’s soccer federation, Levan Kobiashvili, said this about Kvara.“There are a lot of wingers who are technically gifted and very quick, but Khvicha offers something completely different. I don’t think we have seen many players who have such a relentless attacking style, who do everything at such speed, not only in Georgia but in Europe. Everything is through his instincts. That is what makes him so exciting.” It is clear that most managers would only dream of having a player of his quality. As well he is only just now starting his career with him being only 21 years old. He will only become more dangerous with experience and time.
